Colorado Winter Photo Workshop

Snow-capped peaks and beautiful contrast of snow, trees and shadows. Learn how to use your eye to find breathtaking winter landscapes and overcome the challenges of winter photography to create dramatic images and develop a new appreciation of Colorado's winter landscape through vision and technique. Also highlighted will be exposure control.

For those who like to experiment with black and white photography in Photoshop, this will provide a lot of material to work with. But, a crisp blue sky above a white hillside offers color and contrast that can't be matched. There will be snow to photograph, let's just hope we have a fresh layer of several inches to work with on at least one morning as nothing beats a fresh snow covering trees, fences and old buildings.

The San Juan Mountain area of southwest Colorado is one of the most majestic areas of the state, no matter what the season. We will explore areas where vast landscapes will mix with initimate spots to create some memorable images of the beauty and serenity of winter.

Because so many photographers tend to stay inside at this time of year, this is why we'll be by ourselves on this adventure. The opportunities that are available are boundless, no matter where we visit. If you like to be out there by yourself when you shoot, you'll be in your element.

The tranquility of being alone out there shooting will make the trip even better. Besides being one with nature, there is plenty of time to reflect on the surroundings. While reflecting on what's out there is nice, the real reason to go out in the snow is to photograph it. And this is where the fun begins on this trip.

Scenes that can seem rather bland in summer, come alive in winter with the isolation that can be created in your photographs as well as some very dramatic graphic designs.

In addition to the landscapes, we'll spend some time at the Ouray Ice Park, where some of the most daring ice climbers in the country will be converging this weekend for a major competition. Just the sight of them working their way up the canyon walls is amazing, but we will spend time taking some very interesting images of these gifted individuals.

The trip will be based out of Crested Butte and Ouray / Ridgway.

Having lived in Colorado for close to 18 years, this trip has been added from work I had started doing on a potential book project that is now on hold while I live in Texas.
