23 - 30 Alaska Northern Lights / Aurora Borealis Photo Workshop |
$2,495 Flight Destination: Fairbanks, AK |
'Aurora' was the Roman Goddess of Dawn, 'Boreas' is Greek for 'wind' making for the Dawn Wind, a wind that can be seen like none other on earth. No pencil can draw it, no colors can paint it and no words can describe it in all its magnificence. The aurora borealis has fascinated man for centuries and is truly a natural wonder no one should miss. Seeing the northern lights is included in every must see before you die lists. Just watching the aurora borealis is a sight to behold as you stand there and become mesmerized by the movement. On this trip, though, participants do more than just watch, as you learn to capture this spectacular action. You'll get hooked on this amazing phenomenon. Several people have done this trip more than once.

You never know what will show up when you finally look at your images. | The northern lights have several different cycles, an 11-year, a 24-year and a 100-year. Over the next couple of years we will be experiencing times coinciding with both the 11-year and the 24-year cycles, making this a prime time to see the action of the sky turning green, blue, purple, red, pink and white as the gases from the solar flares mix with elements in the atmosphere. After much research, this trip is scheduled at both the prime time and locations for making sure northern lights shots can be taken. This will my eighth journey to photograph the lights and there has yet to be a week where there was no activity. Even on weeks when the prediction is for low activity, there have been displays as the spot we go has the highest amount of activity in North America. |
We'll visit two areas working the aurora borealis after the sun goes down and do some landscape photography during the day. The trip starts off with two nights in Fairbanks visiting an area north of town away from the city lights. Some special techniques will make for some great photographs. On Monday morning we'll head north to a unique community within the strongest band of aurora activity in North America in the Brooks Range. We'll stay in a multi-room large cabin for four nights where on most nights all we do is walk outside to photograph the northern lights. During the days we will venture out to do some beautiful winter landscape photography and also have the chance to see Dall sheep. In 2007 we even saw a wolf from about 50 yards away. |
The sky comes alive with the dancing of the aurora. |
The
landscape photography in the area on the northern leg is unlike any you will find
anywhere else in the country. | |
Once we return to Fairbanks we'll spend one final night of photographing aurora activity depending onwhat hashappened during the week and when people fly out on Saturday. On the first Sunday morning of the trip we will visit the Santa Claus House in North Pole for some different images. Also on that Sunday we'll stop at the top sporting goods store in Fairbanks where people needing extra gear can load up on very warm socks, gloves and whatever else is needed as well as photographing a sled dog race | ![]() |
