Penguins of Falkland Islands
Photo Workshop

$6,495 (deposit is $500)

Flight Destination: Mount Pleasant, Falkland Islands

It's summer in the Falklands, and the penguins are nesting. No matter which island and penguin colony you visit, you're sure to find parents sitting on an egg, fluff-ball nestlings, or juveniles ready to go out fishing on their own. It won’t take long to realize you made a good choice to venture all the way south to try and see and photograph a lot of different penguins.

Photograph penguins, black-browed albatross, king cormorants, and more. Find yourself sitting amongst a group of penguins with parents feeding their young, mothers on eggs and courtship behavior just feet in front of you on this one of a kind Falkland Islands photo workshop. Sit still long enough and a curious penguin will walk right up to you and almost climb onto your lap.

The Falklands are home to one of the richest concentrations of wildlife left in the world and include four different types of penguins - Rockhopper, Magellanic, King, and Gentoo. One one island, sightings of Macaroni penguins might be found.

While penguins are the stars of this trip, several large colonies of black-browed albatross as well as plenty of other bird species such as striated caracara, skua, pied oystercatchers, upland geese, kelp geese, Falklands flightless steamer ducks, black-crowned night herons, and dolphin gulls can also be photographed.

Participants are responsible for the cost of hotels, meals and transfers in Chile as one night is required on each end of the trip. Suggestions provided for staying together as a group and doing some photo work in Santiago. Once in the Falklands, flights to the islands are included in the price.

The itinerary in the Falklands is tentatively set for the following:

3 nts. Sea Lion Island
3 nts. Pebble Island
3 nts. Saunders Island
3 nts. Carcass Island with West Point day excursion (albatross)
2 nts. Stanley with Volunteer Point excursion (king penguin colony)

Sign up early and make your plane reservations to Mount Pleasant as soon as possible as the flight to the Falklands fills up very early. Trip balance due 90 days in advance of the start of the trip so that balances for services can be made.

The way the flights here work, you will need to spend a day in Chile on either end of the trip. One night in Punta Arenas on the way down and a night in Santiago on the way back is recommended to see the sights of these two interesting cities.

At the end of the trip, I will be stopping off to spend three or four days in Torres del Paine as a scout trip for a full workshop the following year. The cost of this will just be a split of expenses between all who attend. Right now there are two people probably doing this. Contact me if interested in joining me.
