August 9 - 19 Bears of Alaska Photo Workshop |
$4,695 total - $500 deposit 4 participants maximum Flight Destination: Juneau, AK |
Bears, whales, eagles, glaciers, incredible landscapes and more await in Southeast Alaska as we ride the waters aboard the Dolphinus for a great adventure. While there will be stops for other subjects, the main emphasis of this trip will the the bear activity at two very special places. And to the surprise of many, both brown and black bears work these areas in unison. We will be led on this trip by a very experienced naturalist, a profesional chef for great meals throughout and a skipper with many years of experience of the area. Boat time will be from August 10-18, much longer than many other boat trips for bears. Price includes hotels on August 8 and 18 as well as meals in Juneau and Wrangell. |
The feature of this cruise is the opportunity to visit both Pack Creek and Anan Creek Bear Reserves. Here you will watch bears be bears as they are used to people being present and are protected from hunting. Both have rich salmon streams and intense old growth forests. Anan even has a photo blind at creek level beside a falls where you can be eye to eye with the bears and the salmon. And sometimes your telephoto lens is way too long! Between these two locations you cruise through the prime humpback lunge-feeding and bubble-net feeding areas that for the past 30 years have provided some of the most spectacular whale experiences. Orcas commonly forage here as well, and Dalls porpoises regularly bow ride, providing close up views of these fast swimming animals. Occasionally, "transient" or marine mammal eating orcas chase and feed on Dalls porpoise as well. | ![]() |

Another special experience is a jet boat trip up the Stikine River out of Wrangell to experience the Shangri-La beauty of Shake's Lake and Glacier. The trip starts out in Juneau and winds its way to Wrangell with lots of stops in between. Upon arrival in Juneau there are several options to choose from for our first outing but if timing works out it will be a tram ride up Mt. Roberts for a walk through an alpine meadow. |
